Letting Go

My recent work left me feeling somewhat unsatisfied so I took a short break from painting.  I stopped to consider the influences in my work and to identify exactly what didn't feel right about what I was producing.  I suppose the work was passable by some standards and mostly they looked fine to me, they just didn't feel right - they didn't feel like "me".  I realized my influences were drowning out my own inner voice and crowding out the visual ideas I've carried around for most of my life.

We can't help but be influenced by what we experience.  The influences on my work are from countless painters, sculptors, photographers, industrial designers, architects, books, music, movies, time spent in nature, relationships, and many things I'm sure I'm not even consciously aware of.  The amount of information we process in the modern world can be overwhelming.  I live in relative solitude and have eliminated most of the distractions of society, and yet the noise of the world can be deafening.  I forgot that, for me, art arises from a place of stillness.

I took some time to take stock in what I wanted out of my work and once I answered those questions the changes necessary became clear to me.  I won't bore you with the details of what I came up with.  I hope its evident in the work.  All I can say is that this is the first painting I've done in a while that feels, for lack of a better word, "authentic".
